Fact: dumplings are best served piping hot and fresh from the steamer, not wilted and lukewarm from a takeout container. With this three-tier bamboo steamer, you can skip the wilted take out and recreate the restaurant experience at home. Steamers such as these have been used by chefs for thousands of years because they’re easy to use and they consistently turn out delicious meals. Just fill and stack the steamer in a wok with a little water. Fish comes out perfectly flaky, and veggies retain a bit of bite. Best of all, cleanup is easy with a damp, soapy sponge.

It was easy to use, easy to clean. I made pork buns and will try to make red bean buns soon.

    Seems like good quality

I’ve only used it once so far, to cook soup dumplings, but it seems to be a good buy. Just make sure you have a pan or a pot large enough for it.

    Its a great steamer

I use it all most everyday. Only one small problem there is a piece of bamboo warps out a little bit and you can’t get the two sections together, so what I did was, when I washed them I put them back together wet and let them dry on paper towels and that correct the problem. I like the steamer 👍🏻

This product is great! It is easy to use, easy to clean, and fits a significant amount of dumplings/bao per each steam!

    So well made

This is exactly like the ones in Japan. I lived a year in Japan and enjoyed the food so much. I have finally found the vegetable seeds and have grown my own. This steamer cooked them to perfection. I am so thrilled!

    They match so perfectly

I measured them many times before I open the bamboo baskets. At last I decided to tear off the outer packaging. I was so pleased that they match so perfectly. My instant is 6 quarts.

    I can find no flaws

I’m just delving into Chinese cuisine but the pork steamed dumplings were insanely good and my red bean buns were SO FLUFFY.I made everything from scratch. The restaurant down the street charges 12 bucks for 8 steamed pork dumplings and I made the older Asian lady at the Chinese buffet apoplectic when I kept eating all the buns she would bring out in the bamboo steamer trays. (They were just SO good and paid my money, ok?)Anyway, I’m not expert but these seem to work as well as can be expected. I’ve had no warping and I’ve literally made several batches of good crap in it a couple times a day for the past week. My kids literally eat it as fast as I can make it.My only complaint is that I need more layers. I actually just got on to order this again and thought I’d let yall know!!! 💋

    Quality product

We got this to replace our last Joyce Chen bamboo steamer that lasted for about 14 years until my husband burned it. This is comparable quality and will hopefully have a similar lifetime. The different layers make it versatile, and the lid closes securely. It’s sturdy and works well for a variety of steaming needs. 10/10

Worked very well untill it fell apart

Purchased this to try and make bao and it worked very nicely. We actually very much enjoyed the process and bao we made so we make it pretty often now. Unfortunatly this fell apart after using it a handful of times.I got this with the intention to try bao and maybe buy somthing better if we like it and we very much did. I was intending to upgrade to somthing nicer but it falled apart forced my hand faster than i would of liked.I wouldn’t call it easy to clean. its not very sturdy for scrubbing and you cant get the parts too wet or it will warp. But unless you use metal or plastic steamer youll probably have simialr issues

I bought this to make Chinese pork buns in Eileen Yin-Fe Lo’s

The Chinese Kitchen: Recipes, Techniques, Ingredients, History, And Memories From America’s Leading Authority On Chinese Cooking

. I was immediately happy with the nice solid construction of these, was not disappointed when I tested them using the recipe. This can also be used to heat up frozen dumplings, such as Trader Joe’s which are pretty good. How to use: This steamer can be used directly in a wok over water without any other equipment. To figure out how much water to use, first place the steamer in the wok and see how much space is left underneath. Then remove the steamer, add water, bring to boil and place steamer directly on top; The sides of the wok will prevent it from slipping and touching the water. As the dumplings steam you can see the steam coming up through the top.The FIRST time you use this, first wash thoroughly and rinse, soak all parts including the lid completely submerged in very hot water for a half hour (I used my sink plugged up for this). Then put the entire thing together and steam for a half hour while empty, turn off heat, and let cool. This causes the bamboo to expand and contract and the layers to fit together perfectly–I have used others without taking this step and I do see the difference in how nicely they fit together. This item has two tiers. My dumplings came out identical in the top and bottom tiers, which is awesome. My one disappointment with this is that there is ring adaptor attachment available that can allow this to fit on a regular pot rather than a wok. I do often use mine on a regular pot because I don’t like putting water in my woks regularly. However, most regular pots are slightly smaller in diameter than this, resulting in the steamer hanging a bit off the edge. The result is if the heat is high, the flames can lap up and scorch the outside. I’ve ruined several and one time actually started a fire I had to put out! To combat this problem, there is a metal ring available (not from Joyce Chen) for the 10-inch steamers, but sadly not for this one! My solution is to turn the heat down a bit and sometimes moisten the bottom portion during steaming with a wet towel. Still, I sure would like an adaptor!

    Delicious steamed food

The danger of using an electric steamer is that if you let it go too long the food will get soggy and flavorless. Because this thing is made of porous bamboon and has better circulation, food winds up having a better flavor and more firm texture. It’s not hard to clean, unless you steam dumplings to an oozing mess, but that’s really a matter of operator error.

Liked enough to order again…. After near house fire.

One teen boy helped me make dumplings today. Other teen boy just tried to set house on fire with bamboo steamer….I showed him how the steamer goes into the wok and stressed that it had to stay wet so the wood wouldn’t burn, but not have the water so high it touches the dumplings.I went to another room while the water came to a boil. He then removed the wok with the boiling water from the hot burner and placed the bamboo steamer directly on the hot burner. He thought the boiling water in the wok indicated the burner was hot enough to place the bamboo steamer on the burner….Holy Smoke. So now, 1 day after ordering one, ordering a second bamboo steamer. 🤦‍♀️

    Neatly packaged

So far so good. It was neatly packaged and has a retail box the seller branded. I will update if there any any changes. It’s your standard bamboo steamer basket. Too lazy to upload the pictures though but the box and packaging is decent enough I wouldn’t mind giving as a small gift to someone if they use these

Perfect for steam buns, pasta, eggs!

A natural product made well. We have used ours several times, and each experience was excellent. As steam hits the bamboo, the scent of the food combines with the scent of the heating steamer itself and transports us to a friend’s kitchen in Beijing. Love this steamer!

    Eaten and Splintering

I got my steamer and the plastic wrap was full of sawdust. After further inspection, there were a ton of holes like insects had gotten into it. Holes covered the top, and there were tunnels where they bore into the sides of the basket. After washing and using the basket once, the inside of the bamboo lining started splintering immediately. I think it was where one of the tunnels was. I’ll be returning the basket for a refund. I tried contacting Joyce Chen to no response. I was able to find an 8″ steamer locally, so I’ll be using that for now.

I like the steaming baskets but they’re hard to clean

The baskets are large and can hold a lot of dumplings. However they don’t come with very good instructions for cleaning or maintaining the baskets. One bamboo basket already started to separate. I’m sure if the basket was sturdier or better constructed it would hold together. Price is good but could be lower for the quality of the basket.

    Good steamer for the money

Good steamer basket, though a bit misshapen. Takes some adjusting to get the lid to fit on correctly. There were also some minor stray splinters of wood when it arrived, but after repeated use, those have disappeared.

    Not a great first impression

After giving traditional bamboo steaming a go, I was not impressed with how the endeavor panned out. While the initial cleaning and whatnot was fairly straightforward, the steamer baskets were loaded with burrs and splinters that needed to be addressed. Once that issue was taken care of, I figured that would be the end of the problems, but I was mistaken. After doing the initial first steaming, layers began to bow to the middle over the slats, parts started cracking (or cracked completely away), and it started to become oblong in certain spots. If that weren’t enough, regardless of what methods were used to “de-stink” the basket, it still smelled horrific whenever it was steamed up. Not quite a “bamboo” scent, but more like soggy wood chips that rotted out on a hot rainy day.I was pretty bummed out at the experience, but I suppose I’ll be switching over to the appliance style steamers for my shumai needs.

    Great so far!

Out of nowhere I got on an intense dumpling kick. I wanted them for every meal. So I figured steaming is the healthiest way to make them, and I’ve wanted to have one of these bamboo steamers for many years. No idea why I didn’t buy one sooner, its not like they are expensive.Overall it works great. Both levels steam great. I keep it from getting too gunked up by lining the bottom with cabbage or lettuce leaves. It wipes clean with a sponge, and then I air dry it. I’ve heard that they can get mold if not fully dried. And the design is very simple but attractive. So far so great!

    Beautiful workmanship

At first, the top didn’t fit right after I rinsed and dried the parts. The lid should be better reinforced as it broke a bit on the edges and popped out. Only to discover that the lid handle was inside down. Once I invested the top steamer basket, it fit perfectly. The lid is on correctly and will hold the steam in. I am looking forward to making steamed pork buns and potstickers.

Nice steamer but VERY large for normal at home cooking

This is a lovely well produced steamer but be sure and check the dimensions of your pots before purchasing. The only pot I have big enough to put it in is a giant crawfish boil pot. It doesn’t fit a standard Dutch oven or tall pot with strainer for pasta. It’s very wide. It is a really nice steamer but I’ll probably give it away to someone who uses a pot big enough to make use of it

CAUGHT ON FIRE! NEARLY BURNED MY KITCHEN DOWN! RUN! AVOID!

Used this steamer for the first time and within 8 minutes it caught on fire, with 10″ flames shooting up and 4″ charred embers flying off! It filled the house with smoke and a horrifying chemical odor. Have had doors open and two air purifiers running at full blast and it still smells terrible. Obviously all the food was ruined. Emailed Joyce Chen, and the email bounced back as undeliverable! Amazon would do nothing to resolve. Avoid this nightmare all costs.

finally, an easy way to cook healthy on the fly

This thing is great. I am very spatially challenged, so I had trouble picturing the size and how it would fit into a pot. I do not own a wok. Well, my pots were all too small, so I’ve been using my electric skillet, which works perfectly, but the nonstick surface gets a little screwed up from boiling water in it.I really like that you can either use both tiers or only one. So far I’ve made an entire dinner of stringbeans and frozen won tons on two tiers (came out great), fish and veggies on two tiers (that time I boiled the water off by accident so it had a bit of a strange taste, but still pretty good), and lots of broccoli and other veggies on just one tier. I put parchment paper down every time so I don’t have to spend much time cleaning, and that works great. My only suggestion is that amazon/the seller include a picture of the steamer inside both a pot and a wok to see how to properly use it. I searched online for days for a diagram or picture like that, and then I finally bought it anyway because it was so cheap.

    Nice steamer

It’s turned into dumpling fest at our house! We bought a bunch of frozen dumplings and used this steamer. They now taste just like the restaurant’s we love. I guess you can do veggies in it, but why, when we have dumplings and soy sauce. 😉

    Wasn’t quite what I was expecting….

My old 3 tier bamboo steamer died after 35 years. took me a bit to replace it, I have stainless steel steamers but I really liked the bamboo. This one however, is not made as sturdy as my old one, I nearly popped the woven lid portion out of it’s place, just picking it up.. So I’m not going to hold my breath for endurance here. I also didn’t think to measure my pan I always steam stuff in, My old one fit perfect on my 2 1/2 qt sauce pan with no over hang. This is huge. Now I’ll have to find a pan to work with this, However, I’ll be able to get all the veggies in there I need to. just one teir.

The product looks OK but the box was a mess upon arrival… And someone used brown packing tape to “patch it“… It’s not a huge deal, but if Amazon is going to sell a product at full price as “new in original box” it should be new!

Where Healthy Cooking Proves an Art

My daughter and I studied online videos and recipes before I tried my first meal with this tool. Its somewhat larger than you might expect but suitable to cook a meal for four up to or eight people at once. These are a few hints I would offer from that experience:1) you must thoroughly rinse and scrub the steamer before first use. You cannot use soap or harsh tools to do so. I filled our kitchen sink with very hot water, soaked it piece by piece and use a soft rubber scrub to work away the tiny slivers that are inherent to its bamboo nature.2) when drying, set it over towels preferably in the sun and stack it as it came….otherwise it may dry warped.3) while a large saucepan under it may work, my IKEA sized wok was perfect for this unit. You must fill the clean and grease free wok with about one and a half to two inches of water. Bring to a rapid rolling boil (do not add salt to the water) and set the bamboo steamer with items in place and carefully sealed shut into the wok where it should not be sitting in the water but just over it.4) DO buy the simple parchment paper that you can get at the grocery store near the tin foil and plastic wrap (don’t get the wax backed paper.) Lay a cut sheet over the open steamer unit and press into the bottom, use a finger to create a crease that matches the inner dimensions of the steamer…cut to size and lay one piece in each of the two sections of the steamer where you intend to place the food. (You will be very glad you did when cleanup time comes and you DON’T have to scrub out tiny food particles trapped in the woven bamboo slats.)5)DO NOT reuse this paper, cut a new piece each time you steam food.6) take care to note how long foods need to steam – each item you cook may be different. I found that ten minutes of steaming was perfect for whitefish filets and asparagus spears but too long for broccoil. Place your meat at the bottom layer of the two layers of this unit and veggies on the top layer.7) TAKE CARE to stand back when you open the steamer lid while it is cooking or just after being removed from heat. The steam is VERY HOT! This steamer is not ideal for children to work with. Get a couple pot holders to carefully remove it from the steaming wok and set it onto a towel because it will drip.I found that the sauce I used to marinate the fish all steamed out of it while cooking. While it may work to add things like fresh herbs, lemon or ginger and peppers over the cooking meat, sauces may just steam out. Add them before serving. This first meal I steamed was very bland. I cooked rice with it and we wanted to add soy or other sauce to the veggies, meat and rice. If bland doesn’t bother you, steam the fish and dip it in mayo and drizzle with fresh lemon juice. The asparagus was delicious with just butter but the overcooked broccoli just had to be eaten quickly.I will use this unit again but hope to find some tips to make the food less bland although it is extremely healthy and very well cooked this way. Everything was tender and moist. Since there is no oil used in this cooking process you can control exactly the amount of fat that goes into your body. Once you begin steaming the entire meal will be done in ten or fifteen minutes. Better have your table set and guests at hand. If I can learn to create sauces and seasonings to give it more flavor, the art of using it will match its health qualities and ease of use.

Excellent Dumpling Steamer — and Pie Transport

I bought this 12″ bamboo steamer after reading a Bon Appetit tip that it could be used as a stackable pie caddy, but, of course, I couldn’t own one without using it for cooking. I’m a huge fan of Chinese dumplings and steamed buns, and this steamer opened up wonderful possibilities, especially since I can cook two different kinds of dumplings or buns at a time, one on top of the other. The 12″ steamer needs a large wok or skillet to work properly since it must fit inside the edge with boiling water more or less sealed underneath. Smaller versions of the bamboo steamer might be more practical for most kitchens, although if I am going through the efforts of making dumplings, I want to cook many at once.I line the bottom of the steamer with parchment paper rounds to keep the food from touching the bamboo directly (it’s easier to clean that way and to lift out with chopsticks), a method similar to what I saw in China. I cut these rounds myself, although you can buy the more convenient

Helen’s Asian Kitchen Parchment Steamer Liners

. Foods that take longer to cook must be positioned at the bottom, closer to the steam, with fast-cooking dumplings in the top tier. You can purchase two sets and stack them four tiers high.Cleaning is easy. The instructions advise to never use soap because it will permeate the bamboo and later flavor your foods. I rinse in warm water, rubbing any food particles off the surface, and let dry. Here I go against the instructions because I stack the two trays after towel drying and let them air dry further while in place. I don’t want them to warp so that they no longer fit tightly. I dry the top separately, only because if I topped the trays, they wouldn’t dry.As for using a bamboo steamer as a pie transportation caddy, kudos for Bon Appetit for suggesting this. I find that the 12″ size is the right one to stack 9″ pie plates because you need room to get your fingers around the pie tin to lift it out. Because the stacks are limited it height, flat pies — such as pecan or any single-crust pie — fit best in it. An apple pie, with its relatively high crust, can only fit in the top tier and then only without the cover. I also intend to use the steamer to transport Christmas cookies to keep them from shifting off their tray while I’m driving.– Debbie Lee Wesselmann

    What you need to know

I am happy with the steamer, especially for the price.Which size to buy? Unless you really need as much space as possible (to cook more food fast), I would mostly go by whether you have a big enough wok/pot for the 12 inch or 10 inch. The 10 inch should be big enough to cook most meals for two. If you buy the 10-inch model instead

Joyce Chen 10-Inch Bamboo Steamer Set

, you save some money. I also found a steaming ring for sale on Amazon which only works with the 10-inch models. You only need a ring if you plan to use it with regular pots.

Helen Chen’s Asian Kitchen 11-Inch Steaming Ring

They also sell pre-cut parchment paper sized for the 10-Inch model.

Helen’s Asian Kitchen Parchment Steamer Liners, Pack of 20

(However, I prefer to cut my own, anyway, or use leaves instead of paper. It looks nicer and would save a little time to buy the liners.)Being natural wood, you should expect it to have little “variations” or flaws. Mine had little fibers sticking up/out in a couple areas. I wish mine was also more perfectly round. I understand that it’s how they are made, and am not deducting for this, however. Not being perfectly round means sometimes when I want to put the lid on, or stack the trays, I have to rotate the piece. Just takes a couple seconds, but is a definite inconvenience. In the cooking surface area, some of the wood pieces are slightly darkened or greenish in areas. I am paranoid about mold and at first I was upset by this. But I realized it must be from the bamboo natural color variations.I wish it had little handles on the sides, to lift a tray off, but I only see this on stainless steel models. The tiny handle loop on top works great for me.I read a review on Amazon about a bamboo steamer where the guy said it imparted too much wood taste to the food. I was in disbelief and discounted what he said, but now I understand what he was saying. It really does transfer to the food too much for me UNLESS I use parchment paper or lettuce or cabbage. If the food is not touching the bamboo, it’s fine. If you use many spices, you may not notice. There is still quite a wood odor coming from the moist steamed bamboo, which I find mildly unpleasant. However I am glad I chose this steamer. Many stainless steel items impart a slight metallic taste to food which I wanted to avoid. Higher quality SS may not. If you don’t mind stainless steel, I suggest going with stainless steel over bamboo.I am usually careful, but have occasionally gotten food on the steamer, and was a little frustrated when trying to clean it. If the food gets wedged down in there, it can get stuck. Also, the many crevices trap soap. If I use soapy water, I usually have to rinse each side twice to get the soap out of all crevices. I’m picky about getting all the soap out. When using a standard sponge to clean it, I am careful and don’t press hard. But even when being careful, I have gotten tiny bits of my sponge “snagged” by the crevices. So far they have been easy to pick out.BTW, I read that bamboo needs oiling occasionally to keep it in good condition. This maintenance is fine with me. It only takes a few minutes.

    ITS NICE FOR THE PRICE!

It is sturdy and works well just wish the bottom had a metal rim to keep the wood from burning in the wok

    A must have!!!!!

Absolutely love this steamer, this is my second one. I use this for pretty much everything, so much healthier than boiling everything in water. I can even steam corn on the cob in it. It came nicely package. I think everyone needs this beautiful piece of cookware in their kitchen.

    Wow really sturdy

I used to have one I just bought at a garage sale. This one is much better. Well made, sturdy. I can’t wait to use it! Thanks for a great steamer!

Functional, sturdy, but poor finish quality

This product is very good for people who doesn’t have steamers or steaming pots, but already owns a wok or big pan.I’m mostly happy with the steam basket product, it’s clean and sturdy which are the most important quality. The construction is done in a way that feels tight, with no obvious loose parts. The only gripe I have is with the finish quality, which is quite poor. There are splinters all over the product, and some bamboo pieces are near-split. I used my own box cutter to shave off splinters from almost the entire basket. I grew up in Asia and is familiar with steam baskets, and I must say the finishing quality is bad even compared to Asia, while being a lot more expensive at $20 range. If you are interested in steam baskets, I would recommend trying to find one first at local Asian goods store or Asian restaurant suppliers. Failing that, this product is decent if you’re ok with splinters, or willing to put a bit of work in to clean up the finish.

    The best on the market

I buy one of these each year. I use this very often. Recently I tried a different steamer made from stainless steel and the result is awful in comparison to this. My only issue is the bamboo smell when you start using a new one… but this does not transfer to the food. It gets less and less with each use. The only reason I buy a new one periodically is because this is a natural product and I live in a tropical climate. I replace my steamer and wooden kitchen things like boards and bowls and spoons as they are porous and i don’t want to gross anyone out, but let’s just say, this is good practice 😬

    Lid separated

We have had this steamer for only 3.5 months with normal usage and the lid has separated. This is not good. It is beyond the return window and I feel like my product should be replaced.

    Great steamer!

This bamboo steamer is great! The quality seems to be good and it seems like it will last a long time! I’ve only used it once so far to make homemade steamed dumplings – unfortunately my husband had a bad reaction to whatever was used in the dumpling wrappers I got from the local Asian store so I haven’t gotten a chance to use it again. But for the one time I did use it, it worked great! It was so convenient to use it sitting in just any frying pan big enough to hold it. I also have a wok and will probably try using that next time as a base to hold the water. The only negative is that it took 4-5 days of sitting out in the open to dry. We also live in south Florida where the air is generally more humid so this may be a reason why it took so long. After reading some reviews of people’s steamers getting moldy when put away I wanted to make sure that this did not happen with our steamer. I feel like this would be a risk with any bamboo steamer and just one of those things you probably have to take into account when using it. Other than that small inconvenience – I would definitely recommend this product to anybody who wants to steam at home. Oh, I also lined the bottom of each layer with a piece of parchment paper I cut into a circle (smaller than given space to allow steam to travel through).

    My First-Ever Bamboo Wok!

The media could not be loaded.

I wanted to make vegan bao buns and dumplings at home, so I purchased this steamer along with some liners. I have to tell you, it worked GREAT! It was so easy and the instructions were very clear. I made a nice batch and there was no damage to my streamer, nothing stuck and it all cleaned easily. Made very well an I hope I can use this for many years.

    Impressed

I wanted to find a different way to cook vegetables because mine were always bland. Everyone was telling me steaming was the way to go, and I bought this one because of the price tag. It is phenomenal!I have steamed broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, asparagus, salmon, and beef in it. They all turned out awesome.Pros:-Easy (I put whatever I want-Quick (Cook times range from 5-20 minutes. Veggies are done in 5-8, and the salmon was even done at 10.)-Heatlhy (Steaming retains more nutrients than boiling or microwaving)-Great tasting (I thought people were just mouthing off, but the vegetables were noticeably better tasting, and I kid you not, the salmon was the best I’ve ever had!)Cons:-Probably won’t last a long time (For the price though, it’s really not an issue)-You have to line the trays (I prefer to use big leaves of lettuce, but I have also used wax paper, and even put the salmon in on a small plate)Other thoughts:10 inches isn’t that big when you want to steam a whole meal for 2 people and still leave room for the steam to escape around the edges. However, this size fits my pan, and they are stackable, so I’m going to buy another set to double the trays!I wish it came with a recipe book or steam times because sometimes I’m not sure how long to cook things. Before cooking your meats/veggies, try rolling them in butter or oil and experiment with different herbs. My favorite thing to do is to use broth instead of water in the pan, it adds some extra flavor. You can also throw other things in like garlic cloves or onions.

    Works but strong smell

Works but the wood has a very strong smell that is hard to get rid of, and it’s not just the smell of wood, it’s like a bleached wood smell. Definitely affected the taste first few times, and had to throw away food.
