Cheap material
I’ve had to replace the phone mount 3 times already the inside of the mount is made of a brittle plastic the spring will eventually cause it to break every time it’s the same brittle part in the plastic that breaks it’s the only defect they usually last half a year for me then they chip inside and it breaks 🙃

Great but not durable
I absolutely love this brand and have the window mount in my car and the mounted balls throughout my home and office. However, this particular device has caused me me so much money. I find myself replacing the phone bracket at least every 5 months due to the the plastic breaking and it unable to hold my phone anymore. I’m really not even that hard on my device but here we are purchasing my 7th one in 3 years. At $20 they’re relatively inexpensive but it does add up. Steele… please fix this. If this next one breaks I’m going to ditch the brand altogether and buy something else. The only reason I stick with you now is because I love the magnetic feature. Please fix.

It is very easy to use with my Galaxy S7
I recently bought a car that already had the Steelie magnetic ball mounted on the dash, so I thought I’d give the bracket a try. It is very easy to use with my Galaxy S7. It comes with extra pads if your phone is small. I do use the extra pads to give my phone a little more stability. It can be tilted upward and sideways so you can easily see your phone. I like the fact that there is no permanent mount required on my phone, so my boyfriend can put his phone in it when he’s driving my car. The only problem is that I have walked off and left my phone in the bracket several times (first world problems, right?!). Good product. Very happy with this purchase.

No more damn magnets or metal plates on my phone!
Finally I don’t have to attach a magnet directly to my phone case nor do I have to attach any stinking metal plates to it either!! I’ve owned a Steelie mount for a long time now and I’ve been happy with it, but ever since changing to wireless charging with my Samsung it’s been a pain in the ass having to have a magnet attached to my phone. This attachment keeps the magnet in the car on the mount and off of my phone, and I can take it with me whenever I need the magnet to attach my phone somewhere outside of the car. I’ve wasted plenty of time trying to jerryrig a solution like this only to have it fail when I needed it most, but this baby does the job in spades. Thank you Nite Ize! You’ve done it again!

Leave your vent and CD slot alone – this works very well with the base magnet.
Excellent… simply great. This with the magnetic base, purchased separately, is just what I wanted. It grips my Zen-phone 3 lazer tightly, and once popped onto the base magnet, the phone refuses to move unless I move it. I put this on the dash of my 2015 Fiat 500 Turbo; not bumps (and there are many), nor throttles (also many) move the phone once it is attached. Just an excellent product… Now if they only had a 2 inch arm that extended out from the base magnet to bring the phone closer to my hand for access. My 500 has blue&me so music, and hands free phone, works well enough. If you don’t mind sticking the base marble to your dash, or anywhere else one chooses then get this with the base. Leave your vent and CD slot alone.

Wish they’d use more metal
It’s great. You just have to be careful how tightly you ratchet the arms around your phone. After my first one broke I took it apart. There’s a little plastic piece that a gear uses to tighten the arms. Over time this plastic piece will break. That being said I’ve got three of these for all the vehicles.

Love Steelie line but not a fan of this…
My FIL had a ball mounted on the truck and didn’t want to remove it so I bought this, but it isn’t the easiest to take your phone off. Wish they would make an adapter also, because while the placement of the Mount in which this phone holder attaches to was in a great spot for my old phone, it forces me to put my phone sideways for a new one.Would love to see this with possibly a mechanism similar to the iOttie vent clip or dash Mount one.Would also love to see an extension arm that mounts the to the sticky mountable ball and then has another ball that this would attach too!

Does the job it was designed for!
This works just as I expected it to. The only “issue” is the entire holder moves when I go to push release button. This isn’t really an issue, just something I noticed.

Needed an extra holder.
I bought this one as an extra for my other phone. The original mount unit is awesome and still using it till this day. I like how I don’t have to keep taking it in and out the old phone holder. Now I just grab my fine and do what I gotta do. The best thing as well is I can put my phone on Abby metal surface and it will stay freeing up both of hands to do other things or just watch a video hands free. I just love this holder. That’s why I bought this extra one. My suggestion by the mounting set they got first, then if you need an extra mount or replacement then buy this one.My opinions are solely mine and are not solicited by the seller or Amazon. I believe in fair and honest reviews that are unsolicited or paid for by anyone. This is why I assure you are getting a real honest review from me and not some fake review.

One design flaw
I’ve been using the Freemount Bracket for 4 years now and have found one common weak point that, at this stage, I believe can now be called a design flaw. The good (when brand new) – it’s easy to use, clamps down on the phone well, and the magnet with rubber grip holds quite well on the Steelie Ball. The bad – to release the phone from the Freemount Bracket you must press a lever located on the side of mount’s center piece. That “release lever” is held in position via a combination of metal spring, gear teeth, and a plastic pin. The plastic pin is the design flaw. Using the Freemount Bracket daily, clamping and unclamping my phone 4-6 times per day, I have to replace the entire Freemount Bracket every 6-8 months due to the plastic pin breaking off which causes the release lever to disengage from the gear teeth. Since it doesn’t engage, the Freemount Bracket will no longer clamp and hold the phone.I finally switched to a different mount because I’m tired of buy these. The manufacturer doesn’t seem to want to upgrade the Freemount Bracket to make it more rigid. Perhaps if used sparingly the device will last longer.

Works well
The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because it doesn’t fit around my wallet case and I have to take my phone out to use it but it works well otherwise

No more attached magnets!!
After I finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to the X, I didn’t want to have the magnet on the back of my phone case anymore. So I started looking for other options to go with my Steelie mounts and found this gem!! Sure glad I did!! Now my problem is that it’s bulky, so if I was moving from one vehicle to another or inside to work. Then I had to bring it with me especially if I wanted to stick my phone up to read something or snap a selfie in an awkward place where I didn’t want to bring a selfie stick. So I needed up just buying one for each car, and one for work. Only problem now is if I want to take a picture or have my phone on the fridge while I’m cooking to read a recipe then, I have to run out to car and get my holder. They aren’t exactly cheap (hence the 4 stars). But it holds well, grips my phone as tight as I need it too, and everyone loves the magnet on the back when I toss it up on a door frame somewhere in the office while I need to take notes. The quick release has been my best friend when getting in and out of the car, since I have mine aligned to hit it as I pull my charger out, 2 motions in one. Thanks!!

Max’d out with Note 21 Ultra in Defender case
I am giving this bracket three stars because it is very well made, but not very good for a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in an Otterbox Defender case. A year ago, Customer Service stated in a response to a question that the bracket spread is 4-inches and at a “true” 4- inches, it would work fine with my phone, but that dimension is between the hard plastic end pieces. The spread is much less between the soft rubber cushioning material on the faces of the end brackets. The Note 20 with the Defender case has to be wedged” into the soft “teeth” to fit into the bracket at max spread. The bracket holds the phone securely, but there is no way to quickly release it from the bracket. I really wanted this bracket to work so I tried to cut the “teeth” off each side, but they are too soft and spongy. I did manage to remove most of the soft material from the end brackets and then glue a 1/16 inch piece of silicone across the face on each bracket. I managed to get one click of adjustment, but the silicone did not provide enough grip to provide a tight secure grip on the phone. Too late to send this one back, but may have to order another one and put up with having to “wedge” the phone in and not have a quick release.

Think of the use before purchasing
Not for action use; rotates & slides. Good for desk or counter top use. Sides are a bit too low to grip certain phones as well.

One powerful magnet!
I have a Jeep Wrangler, it’s a pretty bumpy ride. I tried several different phone holders, the Steele was the only one able to hold my phone thru all the bumps. I had the small magnet on the back of my old phone. I now have a charging pad and was trying to figure out how to place it so it didn’t interfere with the pad. Then I saw this holder. I was worried it would not be as strong as the original. Boy was I wrong. The part that holds the phone has nice rubber grips and can adjust to many different size phones. The magnet is crazy strong. I highly recommend this holder, especially to anyone that has a bumpy ride!!

Terrible, but you can fix it. (Instructions)
This is the dumbest design for a phone holder. It requires you push down a lever to spring open the side grips. I’d rather the product spring-close on my device. But someone probably has a patent on that so Steelie had to do something else.THE FIXOpen it up: Using a small screwdriver, unscrew the four screws and open the plate. Remove the center cog and the two arms. Remove the lever and the bar spring and throw them away.Reverse the spring: Using pliers, VERY CAREFULLY, bend the bottom hook of the spring upwards (just rotate it up), and the top post of the spring downwards. (I actually broke my post off the spring the first time, but I was able to bend another one in it.) Manipulate the spring over itself so the post is again upwards and the hook downwards (the coil should be going in the reverse direction now).Replace the spring and add tension: Place the spring back in the holder, hook down and post up. Find the post hole in the cog and place it back over the spring with the spring post going into the hole. Depending on your device, you may need to add some tension to the spring before you replace the arms. I have an iPhone 5s in a slim case. I added 3/8 turn clockwise before I placed the arms. Larger devices may not need any tension. To add the tension, use a nut driver (it was either 5/16″ or 3/8″, I don’t remember) to wind it clockwise. Hold it in place and carefully place the arms back in their channel, making sure to get the teeth lined up with the cog.Replace the cover: Place the cover back on the holder and screw in the four screws. For my purposes, I use the additional grip things. Now, I only have to gently push the phone into the holder and it stays in place.I like the Steelie products for holding my phone. I like to be able to maneuver it around freely. I’ve attached the tablet magnet mount to other gripping phone holders and superglued the steel ball to my dashboard. When I sold my car, I sold my previous phone holder. The new owner loves it.

Great adjustable phone holder
This is the second one of these that I purchased. My first one I bought from a Verizon store several years ago, and somehow the part that is supposed to fit snug against your phone (the adjustable part) got stuck, and I couldn’t get it to push in tighter to hold my phone. My son tried to take it apart to fix it but it was not fixable. So I’ve ordered another, hopefully this will last longer. Although I did get quite a bit of use out of my first one.I like that it’s adjustable and has an open frame, so I can have my phone plugged in and the cord does not get in the way. The biggest downside for people may be that you have to adhere a big silver ball somewhere in your car, and it’s VERY stuck. When I pull on mine, it feels like I might break the dashboard before the ball will come off. I’m sure if I want it off I’ll have to use some chemical (goo-gone) to get it loosened up. Meanwhile, there’s a silver ball stuck on my dash. I was able to find a place above my cup holder in the center console that works well to have it attached to, but you need to make sure you really think about where you’re going to want to mount this in your car, because you’re committed once you’ve put it on.

perfect except for one thing..still five stars.
only complaint i have about this is that i have to squeeze pretty card to get it to click/lock into a position tight enough to hold my phone. if i go one less click then it is loose…other than that this pairs really well with the a car mount from nite ize, or you can just stick it to anything metal which is very convenient in many situations!..i use this with the car mount that has suction cup for your windshield and a metal ball on the end of an adjustable/swinging arm..works great in the car. very sturdy and no bumps will ever be stronger than the magnets holding it to your car mount…worth it! oh and best part is you dont always have to use it..very very easy to remove and put on..just keep in mind on my samsung phones i have to squeeze it just a tad hard to get it to hold onto my phone…not like its breaking it or anything, though!

Terribly Unfortunate!
My father had in if these he raved about it. About 6 months in it failed, the pin that pivoted the release arm broke, we were able to rig it with a screw and keep going.I liked the holder a lot and thought the breakage could be a fluke, I bought one and within a few months had the same issue and it broke in the same place. I maybe used it 3 times a week on Avg.I fixed that one the same way and then bought to this one on Amazon as a backup just in case. Well, the repaired online didn’t last and I brought out the spare. It was in use about 6 months and it broke and in exactly the same way the first two I experienced. I feel like a fool having bought 3 now, and do not expect to buy another. What’s super unfortunate is not I feel I need to question the quality of a brand of products I have enjoyed using for years!Btw, I would not recommend this to phone mount to anyone.

Be careful!
We purchased the phone holder at a local store, but wanted to change out phone case and magnet was stuck to it so we had to purchase another case therefore needed another magnet ordered it thinking it was the same size did not know there was different sizes in this magnet. Make sure you’re ordering the one that is the correct size for your phone case but good quality and was exactly like the one we purchase in the store and a few dollars cheaper.

Great customer service
The media could not be loaded.
First on I had lasted 2 years before it quit holding my phone. I purchased a second one that only last one month. The magnet is strong and hold the mount in place, the clamp is the weak point. We will see what they say about a replacement. If not I hope I can get the mount off the dash cleanly I’m done. Will update if service is good.Update: I spoke with the manufacturer and they sent me the newest model free of charge. I was told this model is known to have these issues and has been discontinued. I have had the newer model for over a week now. It holds the phone great and seems to be more mechanically durable. Id recommend buying the new model and if there are any issues they have great customer service.New model:https://www.amazon.com/Nite-Ize-Universal-Windshield-Compatible/dp/B08QR1J56Q/ref=sr_1_54?crid=23GFXQ7EYSC4W&keywords=nite%2Bize&qid=1695322192&sprefix=nite%2B%2Caps%2C128&sr=8-54&th=1

Works well until it doesn’t
I’ve had two of these clamps. So far I haven’t had one work longer than a year. The internal mechanism usually breaks around that time and stops locking closed. Aside from that flaw, it works great, and hold my phone in place. I wish the company cared enough to fix the design or used stronger materials.

Magnet is not powerful enough to hold weight of phone + bracket
I love the Steelie magnetic mount; it has worked better for me than any other car phone holder I’ve tried. I had been using the version that has the magnet glued to the back of my phone, until summer heat melted the stickiness and it kept falling off the phone. So when I found this bracket option, I was happy to try it.Unfortunately, it seems that the magnet on the bracket is not strong enough to hold the weight of the phone + bracket upright. When attached to the car holder arm, it stays on the magnet, but slides down into a position that makes it difficult to view/use the phone. Please increase the power of the magnet on the bracket. If you do, this will be a fantastic product! As it is now, I cannot use it.

Wouldn’t hold my iPhone 7 Plus securely at all, not recommended
My boyfriend has the Steelie mount system in his car and I bought this so I could use it with my own phone while we were on a road trip. He loves the system and it works well for him – he has the ball mount on his dash and the socket stuck to his phone case. However, this worked terribly for me and my iPhone 7 Plus. While it stayed on the mount on his dash just fine, it wouldn’t clamp tight enough to my iPhone in its silicone case or even if I removed the case and tried it with my iPhone naked. My iPhone would slowly slide down in the bracket and would have fallen out if I didn’t push it back up every few minutes. It was maddening to do while driving for several hours. No matter how hard I tried to squeeze it so it would click into a notch to hold my iPhone tightly enough, it just wouldn’t stay.In the future, I’m just going to have to get a spare iPhone case and use one of the stick-on phone sockets with it to use the system in my boyfriend’s car. In my own car, I use a ProClip system and while it’s more expensive, I far prefer it over the Steelie system after this terrible experience. Another user here mentions a similar problem and provides steps to modify the clamp and while I appreciate the instructions, it’s not worth my time to try to modify this. Nite Ize really just needs to make this a better product. Right now, I’m not interested in investing any more in this system aside from the bare minimum I need to use it with my boyfriend’s car.

Just what you need if you use a wireless charger on your phone.
I was trying to figure out how to use both a wireless charger, and my “dash ball/magnet” type phone holder I use. I can’t put a metal disc on the back of my phone’s case, and still use my wireless charger. I needed something to “hold” my phone that I could easily remove. Enter the Steelie Nite Ize. Voila! Perfect!!! You can order this item with or without the metal ball that attaches to your dash. (I have two applications, so actually ordered both.) Your phone easily fits into and out of the “cradle” which attaches to the metal ball so you can reposition the phone anyway you need to.

Hey, just needs a little upgrade to be 5 stars!
Bought this August 22nd 2018. It broke yesterday exactly 8 months later. I used it often and loved it until it broke. I do like the fact that you can take it apart by removing 4 screws. I took it apart a found a plastic pivot pin for the unlocking lever had sheared off the case. If the pin snaps then this will no longer lock down on the phone rendering this to nothing more than an expensive refrigerator magnet.Bottom line is I am not going to like buying another, but until I find a phone mount that meets my needs better than this, (this is a fantastic concept), I will continue to pay nearly $20.00 every 8 months.I plead with Nite Ize to redesign this to include a more rigid pin possibly made from metal!

So Far So Good!
Bought a “new” used car and it had a crazy knobby thing attached to the dash… on the side it said steelie, so that led me to this… I was worried it wouldn’t work, but it does! And I am happy with it! Took a minute to get the width correctly proportioned to my phone with the case on, but once I got that right, all was good, seems to stay in place so far… might not if on a super bumpy 4WD road, but that’s rare.

Love this product!
Great product. I had already had the base from before but I was using the adhesive circle magnet that stayed attached to my phone case at all times. I decide that was annoying because you had to replace the adhesive e erutime you took it off to change phones or cases. With this I just clip my phone into it when I need to it doesn’t stay attached all the time so it’s way better.

Steelies are the best
I use this with iPhone 12 with an urban armor gear cover. Works very well. Holds phone in place on my jeep dashboard even while 4wheelin on the Rubicon. It isn’t a perfectly solid clamp but provides some shock resistance and the phone doesn’t even slip. Just follow directions and you’ll be very satisfied.

Repeated failures over a 21-month period (starting March 13, 2017)
First, I love Nite Ize products, and the Steelie line in general. Most of these products have performed flawlessly. The only exception has been the FreeMount. I actually purchased 2 (1 for my car, one for travel), since my phone has Qi wireless charging. My wife’s iPhone doesn’t so in general she does not use the FreeMounts and has a Steelie on the back of her phone case. I planned to keep one FreeMount in my travel go-bag, one in my car. I’ve been experiencing a failure every 4 to 6 months or so with my daily use mount, so my go-bag FreeMount is pressed into service while waiting for a replacement. The problem isn’t entirely clear, but it is clear that the ratchet locking mechanism fails to engage after a period of time. I think the problem lies with the fairly thin plastic cover held in place by 4 small screws. It looks too flexible and may be permitting the device to curl away from the phone with repeated use, permitting the gears to shift. Regardless of the cause, the FreeMounts seldom last more than 6 to 9 months. And it isn’t due to careless, rough handling or excessive force. Here’s the real problem: until September 2018, Nite Ize HAD been good to provide replacements. Now I get a “gee, sorry, we’ll get that right to you!” – or “crickets.” No response. More importantly, NO REPLACEMENT IN THREE MONTHS.Very disappointing. I do not recommend that you buy this item. STAY AWAY!

Needs A Redesign
I have come to expect great things from Nite Ize, so this was a bit dissappointing. The whole Steelie mount idea is awesome and I highly recommend it, but the Nite Ize phone bracket is not ready for prime time. I have a standard iPhone with leather case, and this holder has a hard time holding the phone in place over a bumpy road. The problem is the missing bottom clip to add a little more security. In fact, I made my own bracket with some chrome wire and it works great. For the price I paid, that should not have been necessary. There are better brackets out there. Glue your Steelie magnet to one of those.

Love it!
Their design is one of a kind but if I had advice for the designers of this product I would suggest making the ball, which adheres to the dash, similar to a golf ball. However, where a golf ball has multiple divets you could make this with multiple flat areas that, when matched to the attached phone piece, would keep from “sloping” when on rough roads. The phone piece could also have flat portions to match the mount….just an idea.

Try before your buy…
I see why some folks might have negative reviews of this phone clamp. It’s not the best made item ever. It grabs my phone TPU bumper far better than a 2-piece case. And the ratcheting adjustment may not be exacting enough to fit your cell phone. No matter, you will have to clamp it hard and hope it fits well. The magnet is over-sized and really fits well with the existing ball-socket Nite Ize stuff.Personally though, I have had zero issues using it with my Moto Z Play. I’ve tried it with two other phones (Samsung and LG) and it was a little tricky. It’s not a bad item, but it does leave a lot to be desired. Try before your buy if you can.

Keep the Steelie ball mount, ditch the magnet.
Bought this to replace the magnet that stuck to the back of the phone as my new phone charges wirelessly and the magnet got in the way. This holder works perfectly with the ball mount in my truck and allows me to mount up other phones too. This mount can also be used with out the ball mount, just as the magnet did, and I can mount my phone to and metal surface.

Losing Its Grip
I liked it for a while. Received it in Feb, but now it’s July, and the clamp is losing its grip. In the vertical portrait position, the phone is sliding down, and falls off, no matter how tightly I squeeze it. I was going to send it back, but the return cutoff was in March. I can still use it in horizontal landscape position for this temporary phone, in a temporary place. But when I go back home in the fall, and resume using my primary phone, then I may get a different mount for it. It’s a good product, but it needs to be improved.

Best Mounted Phone Holder!
This is my second purchase of this mounted phone holder. The first one my husband bought this on his Military base and we had to buy another one for our other vehicle through amazon since they ran out on base. Best mounted phone holder ever! Excellent quality and worth the money. The suction cup grips well and the fastener secures it in place. Phone does not slip and the magnetic ball ensures a strong hold! Im a picky buyer on anything and i look for quality. This is a great buy!

very pleased, but short life span!
Have been using my second one for about 3 1/2 months. Although the spring mechanism on the phone clip broke once, the adhesive on the base containing the steel ball is great. Since this is my second one that has broke within the year, I decided to go the direction of the flat plate adhesive option.

It works!
Bought this as a replacement for an older cradle. It works but feels less sturdy than the previous one.

No more adhesive or headaches
Been using Steelie’s for nearly 10 years now. Love the magnet and confidence I get when I use this product. However, I also use Otterbox cases, which the adhesive won’t stick to. So previously, the only way around using the Steelie for me was to try and adhere the socket to the belt clip that Otterbox provides and keep that in my car. Found this product this summer when I got my new Samsung 21 Ultra. Was worried about my phone being too big, but this works on the 21 Ultra. I also have an iPhone 8 for work. Works on that as well. No more adhesive strips or superglue or belt clips!

lower points than most stealing products
I only gave 3 stars because the extra cushions to hold in different sized phones will not stay in place, I noticed my son has one of these and is experiencing the same problem

Works perfectly!
Grabs your phone at the perfect strength (adjustable) and stays where you place it.

Not for continuous uses.
My husband bought this to hold his phone in the dash. Since he uses a van for work, he needs to use his cellphone threw out the day. The regular daily uses have left him unable to use this. The insides are made up of mostly plastic parts that break quickly with regular use.I would suggest getting the magnetic for the back of the phone instead.

Great Utility, Poor Durability
I love these things, I have now owned 3. The first one, I resized too often and it broke. I took it apart and tried to fix it, but it was a critical plastic nub inside which had broken. Repairs were not successful. However, if you size it to your phone and then never open it again, just keep cramming your phone into it, it’ll last longer. Instead of resizing it for my phone or my girlfriend’s tiny iphone I just have two, and I keep hers in the glovebox until she uses it. I ALSO have two mounting points on my car so I can have mine up top for the GPS and she can put hers down by the dash so she can control the radio. And swapping them is easy when we switch drivers!

Great mount
Was a great mount when it worked, the plastic in the middle failed after a year of constant use. Made of quality plastics so I was surprised it broke. Everything feels like glass reinforced plastic, the same type used in power tools. Switched to the newer pinch to open mount by this brand and it’s even better made!

The only Nite Ize product I’ve ever not liked
I bought the Nite Ize Steelie FreeMount Component to use with my iPhone 13 Pro and I was extremely disappointed. The latch to release the bracket and attach it to the phone is in a place that makes adjusting it cumbersome. I also found that it didn’t grip well and I was concerned my phone would fall out of the bracket with any substantial jostling. On a positive note, I just bought the mount that works with the Mag Safe back of the phone and along with the Steelie window mount it is perfection! Skip the FreeMount and go with any other Steelie options, they’re all great.

Holds well! Especially over the road in a semi truck!!
I use this bracket with the Steele ball. It is mounted on the dashboard of my husband’s semi truck. The bracket holds my iPhone 13 pro max snuggly in place. Believe me, we have been down some horrible rocky roads!! I-55 in MS, LA, AR. It hasn’t fallen out at all! I highly recommend this bracket for anyone traveling rough terrain, I.e. the interstates!!!

Gets the job done!
I had a Steelie magnet mount which required a magnet on my phone. Once I upgraded phones I wanted to do away with the phone magnet, so I found the free mount bracket! It works wonderfully so far! I have had it about 3 months with no issues whatsoever. I do wish the part you place your phone in felt sturdier than it does, but again, there have been no issues so far. The phone stays in place even while going over bumps and the quick release lever is super easy to use.Overall this is a great product!
