Large Pestle for the big jobs
This is sizeable and takes up some space but very sturdy and efficient for tougher hand grinding jobs. We use to grand a tea that is made of tougher grass like leaves. I would have liked to see a thin skid proof rubber or similar protective sheet on the bottom surface to protect whatever you set it on. Overall does what we need and pleased with product.

Perfect!
I searched for awhile for one of these. A lot of the cheaper ones said they came broken. This one luckily did not! We are using it to break downEgg shells for plants currently but will probably use for making guacamole too. It’s not a huge bowl so you can’t make a family’s worth of gauc but I think it will be enough for me and my boyfriend. I love it it’s sturdy, heavy so I feel like hopefully it won’t break easily. I will update if anything happens but so far I love it!

and I was afraid I had something that would be no better than a doorstop
I was not sure if I wanted a mortar and pestle or not, I’ve been cooking for 30 some yrs without one. But in reading about them, I wanted to try one. I am so impressed. To be fair, My first impression was fear–I tried to grind dry rice to clean the mortar. I was not strong enough, and I was afraid I had something that would be no better than a doorstop. My husband was kind enough to grind the rice for me, but I was afraid that other things I wanted to grind would be too hard for me. Not at all. When I began to use it, peppercorns and other spices crush right up. I think the crushing brings out more flavor than using a spice grinder. I like my pesto because it maintains a better texture than it does when using a food processor. I can’t really compare to other mortar and pestles, but this is comfortable with a good amount of roughness inside and an attractive exterior.

Better than I expected
I really thought this was gonna be plastic or like a cheap stone. No, it’s real, heavy, granite. It’s great for grinding stuff really fine because it’s so heavy. The handle is nice and smooth so as not to scuff your hand, but the inside of the bowl and the bottom of the masher are rough and do their job well

Great quality & perfect size for medium/small batches
Received this today, already made an excellent batch of pesto. Perfect size for medium batches, good weight — doesn’t move all over the place, pestle is perfect weight to delicately smash. Pestle tip has a good amount of unpolished surface area, really let’s you grind/break down leafy material. Overall excellent product.

Perfect for grinding / crushing spices
I bought this to crush spices for Indian cooking (i.e. garam masala). Some people had suggested using a food mill or coffee grinder but this is the perfect size and much more effective. It’s made of granite and is very well made. It’s quite a good looking piece of stone. It has just the right surface inside and the outside is smooth to the touch. I’m extremely happy with my purchase. When you crush whole spices after gently heating them it releases far more aroma and flavor into your dishes. Using pre-ground spices just doesn’t have the same effect.

2nd one is a different color.
Good quality at a great price. I’d like to order another but it’s no longer available. 🙁 Not sure why they want a review if that’s the case.Update: They got them back in, so I ordered my daughter one as a gift. I was surprised to see it’s a completely different color. Mine looks just like the one in the advertisement. The 2nd one is quite dark, and not marble looking. It’s still the same good quality, but thought I’d warn people they may be surprised by the color.

This is amazing…Just buy it.
There are so few times that you get something from Amazon delivered that you are left so satisfied and amazed. This is one of those times. From the packaging to the look and quality of the product, this was just a wonderful purchase that will def. not be sitting in a cupboard, but right on my counter for all to see. I am not sure if I’ll even need to buy one again because this mortar and pestle is a very solid piece that could last a longtime, but if do, it’ll be this one.

High quality Mortar & Pestal
I’ve purchased a few different types of mortar & pestal and this particular one, made of granite, is my favorite. It is very well made and easy to care for. It is the perfect size for my needs. I use it mostly for crushing herbs and spices for recipes.

Great addedtion to a kitchen
I had order one before but after using it three times my wife took it from me and started using it. So, I bought this one so she would have one and I one. She was using a rock and wooden cutting board before. Now she only uses the Mortar & Pestle she took from me. Guys don’t buy one unless you buy your wife one also. : )

Durability
This will last for several generations! Made of granite, is heavy and will make the flavor of food so much more tasty. It does take about an hour to grind the course material off the inside. Like one reviewer said: “If you don’t already have one of these, you have to seriously ask yourself why.”

Gorgeous, well made mortar and pestle
This is an absolutely gorgeous mortar and pestle that I proudly display on my countertop. It is very heavy, and well made. It makes grinding herbs and spices easy and is big enough to also use to mash avocados to make guacamole. This would make a great gift for cooking enthusiasts.

Beautiful product! Very well pleased
Its beautiful! And it works well and is easy to clean. Just make sure to break it in by grinding some rice to get rid of any loose stone. Its kind of like when you sand wood to get rid of splinters. So excited to use it more! Already planning what to make next!

This is very heavy and works quite well with the large pills I can’t easily swallow. I use it twice daily and it crushes the tablets well. I’m sure it would work equally well with herbs and spices. I would buy again.

Your house needs this!!!!
This has been the greatest buy for us! We use this to grind up our fresh herbs, especially garlic. No need to wash with soap or sponge because the stone can hold in oils and etc. We put boiling water in hours to get it clean. I would recommend this product to anyone who uses it for culinary purposes or for making oils, tinctures and salves.

***BROKEN PESTLE***Defective? No Recourse from Cole & Mason
Bought this product in December 2017 and today while making guacamole the pestle split in two on the upstroke. I was surprised because I’ve never dropped the pestle or pounded it hard. I have a low rated smaller white marble pestle and mortar which I’ve dropped and pounded and it’s now over 10 years old. The Cole and Mason 5.5 inch pestle and mortar seemed to be a sturdier ether quality product but in he en was far short of that. Now I need to find a pestle. I reached out to Cole and Mason and they will not give me any options for a replacement (even though the pestle was more than likely defective). Cole and Mason will not even offer to sell me just the Pestle but indicated I would need to up a new set.

QUALITY SET
I love this and bought one for my foodie son in law also. He too really likes it. I ordered it in gray and it came in black. Returned it three times for a gray one and it kept coming in black. Finally I kept it because the quality was more important to me than the color. Great for mottling fruit for drinks as well as spices/garlic etc. It shows not currently available, but it’s worth the wait.

Never would have guessed how much I’d use this. GAMECHANGER for me
I love this thing. Only gripe is I’d like it to be a little bigger – but I do a lot of big cooks like Briskets and Pork shoulders, so I need to grind a LOT of spice sometimes.Anyway, freshly ground spice is much tastier and more potent. You also have the choice of how coarse or fine you want your spices ground. It doesn’t take much time at all to grind stuff up.Really surprised how much use I’m getting out of this thing. I reach for it all the time, now.

Pretty good Mortar and Pestle
We liked this very much and it’s really original marble (or at least feels like one) and we have no complaints at all on this (at least till now). Since it’s heavy (good marble issue :-)), one must be very careful in handling it while using and cleaning.

Love this mortar & pestle
This is exactly the mortar and pestle I have been looking for. I like the sleek look of the polished black granite – looks great on my kitchen chopping island. The best part is it’s size. It is nice and deep and is perfect for me to make pesto, salsa verde, vinaigrettes and guacamole. The interior is unpolished, as are both ends of the pestle, making for a slightly rough surface. It is a good weight – heavy enough to stay in place during use, but not so heavy that I have trouble lifting it The measurements are: Exterior – 6″ diameter x 4 1/8″ high; Interior – 4 1/4″ diameter x 3″ deep.; Volume – 3 cups; Weight – about 6 lbs. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a day to day all purpose mortar and pestle.

Great for home cooking!
I’ve had this for about a month and I’m so happy that I bought this little mortar and pestle. It works great and is easy to clean. I use it almost every day and it is holding up great. I’m glad I didn’t spend more on one for my Home cooking purposes. I recognize some people’s broke but my came intact and I purposefully treat it gently when moving it around. I would fully recommend this to someone wanting one for home cooking. I usually use mine for garlic (I tried and didn’t like a press or knife for it).

Fine product but not perfect!
This is a wonderful mortar and pestle with a few caveats. It is made from a solid block of granite, polished on the outside with the inside honed for better grinding. The rounded and flat ends of the pestle are also ground while the shaft is polished. It’s heavy weight makes it stable on the countertop. The pestle is a convenient size for grasping, pounding or grinding. My two caveats are size and durability. It is not the size of the unit shown in the video with this listing This unit measures approximately 5-3/4 inches overall width with the interior a scant 3-1/2 inches. That’s fine for small amounts of herbs and spices but for larger quantities, it’s definitely undersized. I personally think the 7 inch size might be a better option for most cooks and I wish that Amazon had offered that size. Guacamole, aioli, etc would be more easily prepped in the larger size. The durability issue comes from the fact that granite is highly prone to chipping especially around the edges. Having even a small chunk of granite present in your preparation could spell trouble.

Love
I cleaned this with water and rice 4 to 5 times and it has worked like a charm. Its small enough to clean with ease but large enough to make a hood quantity.I could make a whole jar of salsa in this but it works well for what I use it for luke smashing garlic and muddling herbs

Really nice pestle and mortar to make my noots
Got this to crush up some pills for my nootropic concoctions. Works well. Also looks really nice and has good weight to it.However, I realized a bit late that the pills with dissolvable casings should be emptied, not crushed, and using pliers to initially break hard pills makes sure they don’t slide around under the pestle, which just wastes time.Overall, I postponed reviewing this, because it saw less use than I initially intended to give it, but when used, it works good.

I’m impressed.
It’s beautiful, heavy and big enough for most home kitchen needs. This manufacturer has been in business for over 100 years and I see why. Make sure you season it well or you’ll never get it clean again. I’ve been wanting a mortar and pestle forever and I am quite happy with this purchase. We will definitely eat well tonight.

A Sturdy Mortar
I like that this was a solid heavy sturdy product. I didn’t know what to expect for size, but I was able to hold it easily. The pestle is solid too. I was using an extremely small ceramic mortar and pestle to crush eggshells for my garden and to add back into my chicken’s food for calcium. This cuts my crush time significantly and crushes the shells even better. I love it!

Practically Perfect in Every Way
After using mortar and pestles that were too small, too smooth, or too ineffective, I finally found one that suits my needs. For example, I grow and grind my own herbs, love garlic crushed with a bit of salt, use dried herbs and seeds that should be ground immediately before using to get maximum flavor, and frequently make avocado on toast or my own guacamole recipe (it’s large enough for 1 big avocado). Finally, I’ve found an aesthetically pleasing mortar and pestle that’s versatile, well designed, fast, easy, perfectly weighted, and large enough to be useful. Although I took the precaution of “curing” it with dried rice, salt, etc., it was already “clean” so the process was fast. Washing is a breeze; rinse it in hot water (no soap recommended) and air dry. This is an excellent value that I can highly recommend.

Grind like a pro!
I use a mortar and pestle daily (I’m a compounding pharmacist, so I use them to make custom mixtures)…and so I can say authoritatively that most mortar and pestle sets sold for kitchen use are decorative but useless junk. They don’t grind well at all, and the pestles often do not fit the mortar properly (if the convexity at the pestle base is the wrong size, you won’t get an even particle reduction). Some mortars are too shallow and everything spills out, or too narrow and it’s hard to grind in them and difficult to get the spices out of them…etc., etc. But this sucker means BUSINESS.I wouldn’t use it at work, because the surface inside is a bit too rough for pharmaceutical mixing…but that makes it *perfect* for grinding seeds and spices, and it does so very quickly and with ease. There’s enough weight to the set that the mortar doesn’t slide around and the weight of the pestle helps you grind your spices. I ground up some whole spices for a curry powder and it was like, “Grind—grind—holy cow, it’s done already?!?” It’s quick and efficient. It’s also gorgeous. Looks great on the counter….and it’s heavy enough to make an effective weapon of defense. I can hear the “Clue” game now: “Mrs. White…in the Kitchen…with the Granite Mortar.” < SMACK! > Seriously, though, I’d be careful where you put it, so it doesn’t get accidentally knocked over and break your toe. Just don’t perch it on the edge of the counter, set it to the back.Just one more thing would make it perfect: if it came with a mortar card. Those are little plastic scrapers we use at the pharmacy to clean material out of mortars. You can use a rubber scraper, but a mortar card works better. You can get them at pharmacy supply stores, but they come 50 to a pack (check “Total Pharmacy Supply dot com”, “small mortar cards”; they’re $12.50 for 50 of them). Or maybe your local compounding pharmacy would sell you one? You can always call and check! But if you’re looking for a good kitchen mortar, this is it.

Perfect size for grinding herbs and spices.
I use this primarily to grind rosemary and it works beautifully for that. I haven’t really tried it for grinding anything else, but I can see how it would easily work for cloves or fresh herbs. It cleans easily and isn’t too heavy, but sturdy enough. It doesn’t feel like it’s going to crack or anything while I’m grinding.

great mortar and pestle
It’s heavy, larger than I thought, and grinds well. I couldn’t really grind raw rice but that was just to test if I cleaned it well. Why doesn’t the manufacturer grind it smooth for you to remove the loose grains of rock? I watched some YT video that said seasoning takes around an hour. I couldn’t tell but I just kept grinding and swapping water, then wiping it with a towel and a dab of oil to check if it comes back dark like when seasoning a wok. It took a long time, but finally it was ready for use.

High quality very good product
I like everything about this mortar and pestle set. Smooth polished finish outside and a textured work surface inside that helps break down the food, making for faster if not easier work. Very stylish and well made. Heavy and smooth polished stone on the bottom so it will not scratch the counters. I recommend highly.

High quality but know what you’re committing to
The quality of this is very high. It’s heavy, the right size, and looks really good. This is the first time I’ve owned one of these and have wanted one for a long time. I didn’t realize that before it can be used, a new pestle must be seasoned. I also didn’t realize how much work it is to season one. It will be worth it in the end, but my goodness, does it take a lot of work. I’m about 4 hours into it and believe it’s about ready. Just know what your committing to 🙂

Granite is best
I searched and searched for an awesome Mortar and Pestle, that’ll last for years, while also looking quite nice left out on the counter. This one is perfect! I was considering a couple of marble ones, because of their look, but they just don’t have what it takes to function as a true Mortar and Pestle, since they’re too smooth. The roughened granite interior of this, however, is great for grinding up herbs, spices, and such, while the polished exterior is simply classy. This is the best looking one I found for its price range, and it works great. Cumin seeds ground up in this have an amazing flavor that the powder you buy in stores will never have. So much flavor is lost, the longer ground up spices are stored. If you love that extra bit of flavor in your food, I highly recommend getting your own Mortar and Pestle. Oh, and just an FYI, before the first use, wash and air dry. Never use detergent. Then you’ll need to “season” it, in a sense. Grind white rice, in handful portions at a time, until the rice no longer discolors. After that, grind 4 garlic cloves, 1 teaspoon cumin seed, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon peppercorns. Discard mix, then wash again. It’s good to go, after that. Shouldn’t have any little bits of granite in your spices. A nice book to buy, along with this, is: Alchemy of the Mortar & Pestle by D. & P. Gramp

Quality Mortar – Pestle arrived broken bc of poor mfg & amazon packaging
Pestle arrived broken in two – manufacturer’s packaging only, wasn’t secured with the bubble wrap, just placed around it in a loose box of several heavy items. If secured properly, probably could have arrived unbroken. Am requesting a replacement Pestle. The Mortar seems undamaged – is heavy and pretty and I’m excited to use it once I get the replacement Pestle.

Best Size for Occasional Spices
I almost clicked on the top pick from ATK, which is twice the weight of this one, and I’m glad I realized the difference. The Cole & Mason is already quite heavy, and its profile is more attractive anyway, IMO. The loss of a star is because the pestle–as other commenters have noted–is not the same dark black as the outside of the mortar, as shown. It’s still dark granite, but a gray instead. It looks OK, and not a deal breaker, but when you display a feature, you should deliver a feature.

beat my expectations
I’m a 6 foot 4 large man and was constantly fighting using these teeny morter and pestle that are 15 bucks EVERYWHERE. I really needed something more my size. I can say I didn’t consider fit and finish as much as the size but can honestly say I am stunned HOW EASY it is to use. This grinds up spices with absolute ease compared to my old one and not because it fits me, but because of the quality of the finish and form. The fact that it fits me is a super huge bonus. For those ladies reading this scared it’s too big, it’s not! I had my 10 year old grind up some fennel seed and it took him very little time with very little effort. At first when he said there you go dad I rolled my eyes because he’d only just started, but it was done! I can speak highly enough about this for both its perfect size (big enough you can make nearly anything in a decent quantity and also spices don’t go flying when pounding ) but it’s super comfortable to use!
