Happy with LeapTop Violet
We recently bought our 2 and a half year old daughter the LeapTop0 Violet and overall we are very happy and satisfied with the toy and with our purchase.Originally, I wanted to purchase the Scout version so that after my daughter outgrew the toy, my son, (just 5 months old) will be able to play with it as well. I don’t know why, but the Violet version is actually cheaper by a dollar so I chose it.I’m giving this toy a five star mostly because my daughter loves it so much and I feel that she is learning from it as well. However, despite all of its great qualities, I think the design could still use a few improvements. Here are some positive and negative points:Appearance and Exterior Design:It is cute and attractive to me and to my baby girl. I love that it’s purple and pink, I think it is just girl enough without having to resort to princesses or Barbie. She loves dogs and she likes the little paw print mark on the front when it’s flipped close. She also likes able opening and closing it and carrying it around the house by the handle. It is light weight but thick enough to be durable. Of course, she has dropped it a few times already, but so far no harm done. The Keyboard:When you flip it open, all the buttons are just the right size for little fingers. The keys are purple and the letters on them are white, (good contrast) Also the alphabet is all upper case, which I like because that is what she knows right now. She likes pushing the pink mouse up and down. The mouse changes the modes between letters, music and animals.Sound Quality:The speaker is right above the keys and the sound is very clear whether it is music or sounds being played or Violet’s voice speaking or the male narrator saying the letters and their corresponding sounds. The on/off switch also serves as the low and high volume setting switch. Violet, (the little dog character) has a kid-like friendly and upbeat voice. Unfortunately, when it is on the animal mode and you press the J, it will say “Who has kenticles? Jelly fish.” Hopefully LeapFrog will catch this error and fix it for others..Being Able to Personalize:It was no hassle at all to download the application onto my computer, hook up the LeapTop with the included USB cable and personalize. In a few minutes I was able to add my daughter’s name, select for her some music and add preset emails from me, her dad and her baby brother. With this said, it would have been nice to have a bigger selection of music. They let you choose just one sing-a-long song (basically a song with words) out of 5 in total, and you have a choice of 5 melodies out of the 15 or 20 they have. Really, it felt very limiting not to have a bigger variety. This same sentiment also goes for the emails. Basically you have three different emails to add on. You get to choose the sender; Mommy Daddy, other family relations such Aunt, Grandpa, etc or just a name, then you get to choose out of a short list a sentence that you want that email to contain. It would have been very nice to have a longer list of email content, and more importantly, why only three personalized emails. I would have preferred more emails from people she knows and less emails from Violet. Really, the personalization aspect is an excellent idea and LeapFrog could have been just a little more creative about it.Educational Value:I have been trying to get my daughter to answer “What’s your name?” correctly and I like that Violet will says her name when she turns this on and as she plays with it. It will even say “That’s the first letter of your name” when she presses the A. She does know her letters, but she doesn’t know their sounds, and I am happy that she is mimicking the narrator when he says “L says lll L – lion”Fun Factor:She loves singing along with the ABC song and dancing to the other music. She smiles at the animation. She also enjoys hearing and seeing different animals. Her favorite right now is the Bumble Bee and the Umbrella Bird. She will press the B and the U repeatedly just to see the animals on the screen and to repeat the words. She also enjoys making interesting, quirky sounds on the music mode.Screen and Animation:Really, if my daughter wasn’t having so much fun with this toy, I would take off two stars because of the screen. Firstly, I don’t understand why the screen has to be so small. Would it really cost so much more to add an inch? Secondly, it is difficult to see. My daughter doesn’t seem to mind so much, but the images are supper light. A little more contrast would have gone a long way. The animations are simplistic, but captivating and fun enough for a toddler. I just hate that this is such a great toy but the screen design was not well thought of at all.Overall, we are happy we bought the LeapTop Violet for our daughter. The flaws are not a big deal when she is having so much fun playing and learning with this toy. It was a good buy for the price. I would recommend this for other toddlers, but I would warn about the screen.

Good education toy
I decided to buy my toddle one of these little laptops since she always wants to touch my laptop. No while I work, she can also mimic me and pretend to work too… while learning songs, letters, and words. Great toy.

Great for a 2 1/2 year old
Sturdy & easy to use/learn. Offers ABC’s,(phonics/sound & word associated with each letter),music and a game again associated with letter or “picture” using the alphabet. (Also has “email” but we haven’t tried that yet …. he’s 2 1/2!😳🤣)

*Edited Review
Item was not as described, doesn’t have the features they claim it to have. I don’t keep toys unless they are good ones because I hate toy clutter ( you know the toys your kids pick up and put back down within seconds and it just becomes clutter instead of a toy) so I will be sending this back*Okay so that was my original review. But I never got around to sending it back soooo it was wrapped and put under the Christmas tree anyway and I guess I can eat my words because my son loves it. He has the leap frog phone that is super awesome already so when he saw the leap top he was stoked. He is 3 and a half and just starting to understand that there are abcs and things so he likes to play with it. We did a bunch of traveling the week after Christmas and he played with it for the almost 3 hour car ride up and back the majority of the time. He grabs his leap top and his phone and plays “office” with them. His older cousins enjoyed messing with the thing as well. I’m talking 5, 9, and 11 year olds. I wasn’t pleased that some of the features weren’t as impressive as described but my son doesn’t care. He likes it. A great toy for car rides or chill time. The volume had two levels and the lower level isn’t annoying in the car. I’m tempted to buy another for my almost two year old to have for car rides, we travel a lot and I’m not ready to go for utter zombie children with a DVD player in the car yet so this is a good alternative. Overall I can’t believe I’m saying it, I would recommend to a friend. It is small, has staying power(meaning he will play with it for good chunks of time) and it doesn’t annoy the tar out of me so there you go, buy it. And especially buy the leap frog phone too, that thing is the best toy phone on the market right now. These two paired together are awesome, the leap top covers alphabet, the phone covers numbers and counting and is actually surprisingly more impressive then expected.

A hit with the 3 yr old
This was one of his favorites for Christmas. He keeps telling everyone he has is own computer and plays with it often. Love that he is learning while playing and not just watching videos. He wants to take it wherever he goes. Great gift for early learners

I got these as Christmas gifts for each of my great granddaughters, ages 3 and 5. From the minute they opened them, among all the other gifts, both kids chose these to explore first and weeks later are still using them daily. The kids love them!

Buy the old version on EBAY because it’s vastly superior to this new model!
Save your money and buy the old version on EBAY! I always read Amazon reviews before I purchase items, unless I am making a repeat purchase. When I bought this Leap Frog “My Own Leaptop” in June, 2017, I realized it was a newer version than the one I purchased in 2012, but I figured they would have simply made improvements upon the old model. Wow was I mistaken! I should have read the recent reviews by parents like myself who know how fantastic the old version of this toy is and how the new version pales in comparison. Don’t waste your money on a new one. For the same price or less you can buy a vastly superior, used old version on EBAY (see what the old version looks like in my review photos). This is what I did and I will be returning the new model. We debated saving the $6 in return shipping cost to give the new version we bought to someone else as a gift, but decided we cannot in good conscience give an inferior toy to a friend. The old version requires that you download LeapFrog Connect software and connect the Leaptop to your computer. To do this you must have the LeapFrog “My Own Leaptop” USB connector cable (see last photo), internet access, a USB port, and Adobe Flash software (an easy, free download that the LeapFrog software prompts you to download if you don’t have it). I still had my cable from the Leaptop I purchased five years ago so I didn’t need to make sure the used one I purchased from EBAY had it. I bought the used leaptop shown in the photos for $8 with free shipping and no cable. It arrived today and with new batteries and my old cable I was able to reprogram each of the customizable features and now it’s perfect! Below is a comparison of the personalized features of the old version and comparable features of the new version.Old Version:- Upon turning it on it says, “Hi [says your child’s name]!”- You can select one “sing along” song, and five melody songs for it to play, and it also plays a song spelling out your child’s name- When you push the “blog” button, it reads a blog entry and then asks your child [by name] about their day- You can personalize three “email” messages by selecting text from a dropdown menu (you cannot type your own message) and entering the sender (e.g., “Grandma” or “Betsy”). The result is an interaction like this:”You have an email from Mommy [or whomever you program in]. Let’s read it! Dear [says your child’s name], I love you so much [the message I chose]. Love, Mommy. Let’s reply! Dear Mommy, I love you too. Love, [says your child’s name]”. So it simply reads an auto-generated “reply” and says it is from your child, rather than prompting them to “type a reply.” The Leaptop also periodically prompts your child to push the email button, by asking, “Have you checked your email?”- In the alphabet mode when your child pushes the first letter of their name it will switch between one of two results. One result is this announcement: “[First it names the letter.] That’s the first letter of your name [says child’s name]. Let’s celebrate your letter! [Then it plays a fun little jingle.]” The second result is an announcement naming the letter, saying what sound it makes, naming the letter again and saying an animal that starts with that letter.New Version:- Upon turning it on it says, “Hi.”- You cannot select songs. You get what it comes with.- There are no blog entries.- When you select the “Messages” setting it literally says something like this: “I have a message for you. Message: I spent all day… What’s your favorite [game/place]?” or “You have an email from me. Let’s read it. Hi. Writing emails to you makes me happy. Love, [Scout or Violet, depending on whether you have the boy or girl version] Let’s reply. Push the letter buttons to write your reply, then push the paw pad.” When you do as instructed it says out loud each letter you push, and then says, “Well done,” but that’s it. So you could push, “JWZL,” for example, and push the paw pad and that would be your email. It doesn’t read the reply you type (which makes sense since most children will push letters randomly).- There are no blog entries.- In the alphabet mode when your child pushes the first letter of their name it will switch between one of two results. One result is this announcement: “[First it names the letter.] That’s the first letter of your name [it shows child’s name on screen, but does not say it]. Let’s spell it! [Then it spells your child’s name.]” The second result is an announcement naming the letter, saying what sound it makes, naming the letter again and saying an animal that starts with that letter. We gave the Leaptop we purchased in 2012 to our son when he was 18 months old. He is now 6 and he still loves to play with it. Our daughter who is about to turn 3 enjoys playing with her brother’s Leaptop so much we finally decided we should get her one of her own (hence our purchase and return of a new version on Amazon, and a satisfying purchase of a used old version on EBAY). Reasons why we like the old version follow. Both of our children really like singing and dancing to the music and playing at receiving and writing emails. They also get very excited about the blog entries. Neither one of them has ever been too enamored by the facts about animals (although they both are very interested in animals in general), with the exception of a few favorites. I do think the letter sounds have been valuable from an education standpoint for both of our children. The main reason our children, and in turn we ourselves, like the old version of this toy so much is because it engages them directly by name so frequently through the alphabet, music, email and blog modes. The new version simply acknowledges the first letter of their name and the spelling of their name, but never actually says their name. This makes it so much less personally engaging and since younger children do not always know how to spell their names, the new version may as well not be personalized at all for them since it never actually states their name. We brought our 2012 Leaptop every time we traveled with our son from about age 18 months to 3 years. His interest waned enough after that that we no longer brought it on travels, but it remains a much beloved toy for home use to this day. We are extremely confident that the used old version of the Leaptop we just bought our daughter is sure to be her new favorite toy.I hope this review is helpful to parents considering buying a Leaptop. I cannot recommend the old version enough and I’m grateful there are people selling quite a few of them on EBAY. Just keep in mind to look for one that indicates it has been tested and is in good working order, and that it includes the cable if you don’t have one already.

Love it
I love this thing! My daughter loves it even more haha. I searched for a little laptop one day on Amazon because I noticed my daughter propping up books and pretending it was a laptop so I was like oh she would love to have a real one! She does lol. It has different modes and sings songs and she really learns a lot just from playing with it so i’d say it’s a nice purchase for your buck. It’s really durable too, poor little laptop gets WWE schmack downed by my 4 year old all the time and there’s nothing wrong with it

I have two of these, and my kids are absolutely obsessed with it. One is 5 and the other is 2.It has helped both of them tremendously with spelling their name and learning their ABCs. My 5 year old struggled with speech and learning how to spell his name, and this toy has helped him out so so much. Same with my 2 year old.It also has the fun option to play a guessing game with animals, and listen to fun music.

Great toy for my 2 y-o’s birthday!
This is the perfect balance of fun sounds, shapes and games that is easy for a 2-3 y-o to use! I was looking for a ‘laptop’ toy for my daughter’s 2nd birthday but most out there were either too easy (just colored shapes and lights, not a lot of interaction) or too hard (real keyboard, hard to play if you can’t read yet.) She liked playing with my son’s Star Wars laptop toy, but she would get frustrated because she couldn’t make it do the things he could without help. It has a qwerty keyboard but there are 3 different settings so you can put it on alphabet, music or animal games so you don’t have to know your letters to have fun with it! There is an email button at the top which she loves because if you hook it up to your computer, you can personalize up to 3 emails to be ‘sent’ to her. When she pushes it, she hears “You have an email from Mommy!” or Daddy or C—- (her brother.) You can also personalize it with their name. She loves opening it and hearing, “Hi, K——! Let’s learn about (animals, music or the alphabet)” There is a playlist button that you can customize, again via USB. Every kid has their favorite songs so you can program it to play 3 favorite kids songs and there is a list that you choose 2 classical instrumentals from.Basically I can’t say enough about it. If they just want to push random buttons, they will love it. If they are a bit older and can follow simple instructions, the voice of the toy speaks slowly and clearly so your child doesn’t have to read to play the learning games so again, I think they will love it. Mine sure does!

This is the second one I’ve gotten because both of my boys (2 & 3) love it so much, i had to make sure they each had one to play with at the same time. They think Scout the dog is silly and cute, and they love singing along to the tunes it plays. We’ve had the first one for a few years and it still holds up, a household favorite.

Fun Learning for toddlers. My grandson’s favorite toy.
This is the second Leaptop I’ve purchsed. Such a great teaching tool to learn the alphabet, objects, sounds, music. My grandson is 28 months and his blue Leaptop is one of his favorite toys. I just received this pink one is for my granddaughter who just turned one years old. I know the product packaging states ages 2 years and up, but my grandson first started using his at a year for the music and beginning learning his ABC’s. It has 3 modes of play. Here’s information included with the little laptop:1. Emails–lets you hear from scout and violet, plus 3 personalized emails chosen by you.2. Music play list–includes instrumental and lyrical that you chose and download to the leaptop. The sing-along is 1 of 5 songs and and the instrumental lets you select 5 from a list of about 15. The character dances along on the screen.3. Blog–hear the latest blog entries, personalized with your child’s name at the end of each.4. Alphabet mode–introduces letters and phonics. Hear the letter name and sound, plus an animal that starts with the letter.5. Music Maker Mode–turns the keyboard into a music station. The paw print makes background beat while the 3 rows are: silly sound effects, percussion sounds, and piano key sounds.6. Animal Mode–Learn about animals for each letter of the alphabet. Press a letter and hear a clue, the paw print reveals the animal it is. Something I have not yet explored is connecting to the Leapfrog learning path.It uses 3 AAA batteries. I’ve not had to change the batteries yet, but it is easy to do. It has a build-in handle which makes it easy for my grandson to carry around with him. This is a great feature which seems to greatly decrease the chances of dropping. It’s made of a very sturdy plastic and is easy to wipe down after the day’s play.I just can’t stress enough how much my little Sammy enjoys this and what a great learning tool this has been for him. He is so proud of his ability to show and tell about the features and what he is learning.

Our 18 month old son loves this. It’s the perfect toy to bring in the car and to restaurants and coffee shops. He’s too young to play the games of course but he loves to play the songs and the letter sounds. He’s had this for a few months now and still plays with it every day.

Got the old model with more personalization!
As other reviewers have pointed out, there are two models of this LeapTop. The newer 2013 version does not require that you hook it up to a computer for initial setup, but you don’t get to personalize it nearly as much. My three-year-old son fell in love with this new version in a store. (Yes, he wanted pink — his favorite color is red, and pink is “close to red.”) I saw the reviews and considered trying to track down an older version, but I wanted to get the one that he had loved.A few days ago (March 2014) I ordered from this page, but chose Standard Packaging, NOT the Frustration-Free packaging. The seller was Amazon.com LLC. When I opened the package, I found the older model, which has a fake mouse on the right side instead of the fake touchpad on the bottom center. You can see a picture if you search Amazon for Leaptop 19167. I wasn’t sure if he’d like it, since it was different from what we’d seen in the store (and really more purple, not pink). He loved it, and he loves the personalized emails, which are not available in the new model. For approximately $20, I think that this is a great toy. As others have said, the screen is not back-lit, but that isn’t a problem for us. The personalization may not work well if your child has a name with an unusual pronunciation. It seems to choose from a very large database of known pronunciations. If you’re looking for the old model, and you see this review soon, you could take a gamble. I think that the new toy is still a good toy for the price, especially given my son’s reaction in the store, but the older one may stay more interesting to a child when the “new toy” excitement wears off.

My Toddler learned his ABCs from this laptop
I got this for my 1 y/o toddler a year ago. This is a perfect introduction to ABCs for babies. My son has been playing this ever since he was 12months. Simple buttons. Not much going on. Just simple ABCs, its sound and an animal each letter represents. I can honestly say this is where he learned his ABCs. He got familiarized with all the letters and its sound and knows his ABCs before he even turned 2. Fairly durable. He has thrown it around many times and it is still intact! The sound did go out after a year. But I think he may have spilled juice on it. I opened it up and fixed it by putting a coin on that circuit giving it sound. I noticed the sound would come back on when I’d press on it so I put a quarter on it and fixed it right up! lol I do wish the screen/visuals is a little bit better. I did see a newer version of this laptop recently and the screen is colored… still crappy graphics. About $6 more than this…Overall, Highly recommended. This is a perfect “laptop” for babies. They do not need a smart phones or tablets at this young age. MAYBE a very limited time when needed. It really does give it a negative effect on them. I’ve seen it with mine. Also, I might add… If you are wondering about this vs the VTech laptop (which I just recently acquired as well for my now 2 year old) to buy to a one year old todd, I’d buy this first. The VTech one is more like an advanced version. more like for 2.5 ot 3 yo. 🙂

Perfect for eager to learn toddlers
With Covid going on, my kids have been forced to do homeschooling online through their school district. Only problem was that the big kids have a laptop and my two year old wanted his hands on them. So I found this AND OMG! It is so cute! He doesn’t try to touch theirs anymore and sits on his and tells me he’s doing school with them! There are multiple settings to keep him from getting bored and he was able to figure it out himself. The screen doesn’t light up, but for what we use it for that doesn’t bother us. Also, there is a high/ low volume switch- he loves to turn it up to high when the ABC’s come on !! Wish there was a headphone jack- only because he asked for them to be like the other kids doing their school- and because he is by them doing “school”. He already knows his letters so it’s fun to ask them where they are and he claps when he gets them right so we’re even created our own little game that way! Definitely recommend this product for eager to learn toddlers!!!
